Perspective, 2019 - 2020
Transforming the conventional structure of a ballot box, this body of work serves as a physical manifestation of the power of a vote in American politics, highlighting sociopolitical injustices plaguing contemporary society. The understated exteriors of each ballot box directly contrast with their elaborate interiors, demonstrating the privilege of observing these issues from afar and the fragmented understanding that ensues. Nods to the complex interior narratives are observed with the stamp choice on each envelope and the colors of the figures’ clothing. Orientation is strategically considered in each piece, with the physical left and right sides of the boxes being used to parallel their political counterparts. To see the full picture, the audience must literally view the work “from both sides.” By forcing the viewer to approach these issues from differing perspectives, the body of work encourages the audience to question their own preconceived notions and challenge them.
